What to Expect in OTA School
In most cases the course work is about 24 months, with the first year being mainly class-room instruction and with the second year spent doing hands on lessons in a medical center or private care practice. Some of the course work a student will be required to take involves pediatrics, gerontology, medical terms, and physical rehabilitation. All States that require licensure simply call for a 2 year degree. A Bachelor’s Degree is going to be required if you plan on becoming a full Occupational Therapist, but the truth is you will find that the majority of Occupational Therapist started their careers as Assistants and obtained their Bachelor’s Degrees some time later.
Following graduation, those prepared to get started on their careers must become licensed as an OTA. Every State has its own guidelines and regulations which are governed by an occupational therapy board, with a few being private while others are run by the State exclusively. In California, licensing is administered by the California Board of Occupational Therapy. Although each State is different, there are a number of requirements which happen to be common among many of them and include the following.
A person attempting to get an occupational therapy assistant license will have to be a U.S. citizen, needs to have a social security number and must have taken and passed acceptable college course work in addition to having taken and passed the NBCOT exam.
Each State requires a federal background check , but convictions are not always automatic grounds for dismissal. Certain States may consider processing an occupational therapist license as long as a written affidavit is turned in to describe the circumstances of the conviction. Additional circumstances including time frame and nature of the crime may be assessed and be considered to approve licensure .
Each State will provide an Occupational Therapy Assistant licensing kit which will include a number of forms to submit. Do not pay for these forms from a third party since they can be accessed online from many trusted web sites. It is advised to take a very comprehensive look through the forms before trying to complete them. There will be official transcripts wanted; notarized signatures and several States will require you to turn in a fingerprint card which may be completed at a local police station.
Job Environment for Occupational Therapy Assistants
An OTA works with a variety of patients that have needs that will be totally different compared to the previous patient. You may be employed in an outpatient clinic with toddlers who may have food or texture aversions or maybe a hospital rehab center working with a middle age woman with psychological and mental struggles . Though an occupational therapy assistant possesses a large number of job skills, a few of the basics like following direction, keeping up to date with the most recent techniques and implementing and employing the available technologies are the most important. Finally, a COTA also needs to be relatively physically fit, because there will be many instances of transferring patients around, for example from a bed to a wheel chair.
