The first step towards a career as an OTA is finding the right Occupational Therapy School. There are at this time approximately two hundred accredited occupational therapy schools in the United States and Puerto Rico and almost all of the schools accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) offer Occupational Therapist Assistant degrees and Master’s Degrees, with many also offering Doctoral degrees. Before you dive in and pick a school, it is important to examine all of your options and make certain you find an Occupational Therapy school that matches all your preferences.
Things You Must Consider When Picking an Occupational Therapy School
Accreditation by the ACOTE is essential because you can be reassured that you are going to be taught the full range of competencies needed to be a certified OTA.
Occupational Therapy Assistants assist patients on a wide array of conditions and disorders making it important that your training is very wide-ranging and not too focused on one particular discipline.
Another really important variable you should think about is the clinical learning experience. This is the hands-on training, and this is when you are able to interact with actual patients and put your knowledge to use. Some schools commit significantly more time on your actual clinical experience compared to other training programs. In instances where your training program is not devoting a large amount of time with clinical training, make sure that you find out why.
Another thing to think about is the class size. The size of your class may vary considerably from college to college. Make sure that you find out the class sizes at the schools you are considering. Keep in mind, the smaller the class size , the more one-on-one instruction that you receive with your professors.
Taking Occupational Therapy Classes Online might not work for each individual student. Yet, for many of us online courses can relieve some of the burdens of being a full time student. Work and household are often times pushed aside as students pursue their schooling and online classes can provide a bit of flexibility to a busy schedule.
The last factor you want to examine before choosing an Occupational Therapy School is the success rate of the schools you are evaluating. Make sure you find out how many students graduate from the program, what their comments were, and just how many of them have gone to become Occupational Therapy Assistants.
