The initial step toward a career as an OTA is choosing the right Occupational Therapy School. There are presently approximately two hundred accredited occupational therapy schools in the US and Puerto Rico and nearly all the schools accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) offer Occupational Therapist Assistant degrees and Master’s Degrees, with many also offering Doctoral degrees. Before you jump in and decide on a training program, make sure that you examine all of your alternatives to make sure you find an Occupational Therapy school that meets all your requirements.
Items You Should Consider When Deciding On an Occupational Therapy School
Accreditation by the ACOTE is important because you can be certain you will learn about the full variety of competencies required to be a competent OTA.
Occupational Therapy Assistants assist patients on numerous types of health concerns and disorders so it is crucial that your training is very diverse instead of too concentrated on one particular area of specialization.
Another significant feature you must consider is the clinical education experience. This is the hands-on training, it is where you actually interact with actual patients and put your knowledge to use. Some schools apply substantially more time on your actual clinical experience as compared to other schools. In situations where your training program is not investing large amounts of time with clinical training, make sure that you find out why.
Something else to also consider is the class size. The size of your class can vary significantly from school to school. Be sure to find out the class sizes at all the schools you are looking at. Keep in mind, the smaller the class size , the more one-on-one time you will get with your professors.
Taking Occupational Therapy Classes Online do not work for every student. Yet, for many of us online courses can alleviate a few of the burdens of being a full time student. Work and loved ones are sometimes driven aside as students carry on their training and online classes can provide a little flexibility to a busy schedule.
The final detail that you should consider before choosing an Occupational Therapy School is the graduation rate of the colleges you are evaluating. Make sure that you find out how many students complete the program, what their comments were, and just how many of them have gone to careers as OTA’s.
