Licensing Information and Facts
Following graduation, those wanting to begin their careers must become certified as an OTA. Each State has its own policies and specifications which are governed by an occupational therapy board, with many being private and some run by the State exclusively. In California, licensing is handled by the California Board of Occupational Therapy. While each State is different, there are a number of requirements that are common among most of them and include the following.
An individual seeking an occupational therapy assistant license must be a U.S. citizen, will need to have a social security number and must have taken and passed applicable college course work and also taken and passed the NBCOT exam.
Every State requires a federal background check , however convictions are not always automatic grounds for dismissal. A handful of States may consider approving an occupational therapy license if a written affidavit is submitted to describe the circumstances of the conviction. Additional factors including time frame and nature of the offense may be reviewed and be considered to grant licensure .
Each State will provide an Occupational Therapy Assistant licensing kit that will include many forms to complete. Do not purchase these forms from a third party since they can be found online from many legitimate websites. It is recommended to take a very in depth look through the paper work before attempting to complete them. There may be official transcripts necessary; notarized signatures and several States will require you to include a fingerprint card that can be completed at a local police station.
Job Environment for Occupational Therapy Assistants
An OTA works with many different patients who have needs which are often different than from the previous patient. You may be working in an outpatient clinic with children who have food or texture aversions or a hospital rehabilitation facility working with a middle age patient with psychological struggles . Although an occupational therapy assistant has a variety of job skills, a couple of the basics including following direction, keeping up to date with the most recent techniques and implementing and applying the available technology are extremely important. Finally, a COTA also needs to be somewhat physically fit, since there will be many instances of moving patients around, including from a bed to a wheel chair.
