Occupational Therapy Schools in Santa Fe Springs, CA
The first step towards a career as an OTA is selecting the right Occupational Therapy Training Program. There are currently almost two hundred accredited occupational therapy schools in the United States and Puerto Rico and almost all of the schools accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) offer Occupational Therapist Assistant degrees and Master’s Degrees, with many also offering Doctoral degrees. Before you decide to dive in and select a school, be sure that you consider all of your alternatives and make sure you find an Occupational Therapy school that satisfies all your requirements.
Details You Should Consider When Picking an Occupational Therapy School
Accreditation by the ACOTE is important because you will be reassured that you are going to learn about the full range of skills needed to be a certified OTA.
Occupational Therapy Assistants work with patients on a wide variety of conditions and disorders making it really important that your schooling is very diverse rather then too focused on a particular area of specialization.
Another important factor you should look at is the clinical learning experience. This is the practical training, and this is when you are going to interact with actual patients and put your knowledge to use. Some schools commit significantly more time on your actual clinical experience in comparison to others. In cases where your training program is not devoting large amounts of time with clinical teaching, make sure that you ask why.
Another thing to also consider is the class sizes. The size of your class will vary greatly from college to college. Make an effort to find out the class sizes at all the schools you are considering. Remember, the smaller the class size , the more one-on-one teaching that you receive with the trainers.
Taking Occupational Therapy Classes Online may not work for each individual student. Nevertheless, for many of us online courses can ease some of the burdens of being a full time student. Job and family are often driven aside while students pursue their education and learning and online classes can provide a bit of flexibility to a busy schedule.
The last issue you might want to check out before selecting an Occupational Therapy School is the graduation rate of the training programs you are evaluating. Make sure that you find out how many people complete the program, what their reviews were, and how many of them have gone on to become OTA’s.

Every State requires a federal background check , but convictions are not necessarily automatic grounds for dismissal. Several States may consider approving an occupational therapist license if a written affidavit is submitted to clarify the circumstances of the conviction. Additional factors including time and nature of the crime may be reviewed and be considered to grant licensure .
Every State will have an Occupational Therapy Assistant licensure kit which will include quite a few forms to fill out. You should not buy these forms from a third party since they can be accessed online from many reputable internet sites. It is recommended to take a very extensive look through the forms before attempting to complete them. There may be official transcripts needed; notarized signatures and many States will ask you to turn in a fingerprint card that can be completed at a local police station.
